Since joining the Centre de recherche de l’Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal in 2002, Dr. Cara Tannenbaum has been conducting cutting-edge research (WOW, EMPOWER, D-PRESCRIBE), fostering international collaborations and sharing knowledge with audiences worldwide. In 2013, she was awarded the Betty Havens Prize for Knowledge Translation in Aging by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Aging. This prestigious award recognizes excellence and outstanding achievements in knowledge translation in the field of aging at local and regional levels. In 2015, she received the Women of Distinction Award, Health category, from the YWCA of Montreal. In 2018, she was inducted into the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS), which brings together Canada’s leading scientists and researchers in the health and biomedical sciences.
Dr. Tannenbaum has been supported by a Chercheur-Boursier award from the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé (FRQS) since 2004, and has received funding from CIHR for over 20 years. She has held the Michel-Saucier Pharmaceutical Chair in Health and Aging since 2008 and is a Professor at the Université de Montréal in the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy. Dr. Tannenbaum received her medical degree from McGill University in 1994 and completed her specialization in geriatrics in 2000. In 2002, she completed a Master’s degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from McGill University.
In January 2015, Dr. Tannenbaum was appointed Scientific Director of the CIHR Institute of Gender and Health. She works with Canadian researchers and stakeholders interested in gender, sex and health research to set priorities, identify funding opportunities, build partnerships and translate research evidence to improve the health of all Canadians. In 2019, she was appointed Departmental Science Advisor at Health Canada.
Dr. Cara Tannenbaum is co-founder and co-director of the Canadian Deprescribing Network, where she works to optimize pharmacogeriatric care for older adults. She is also interested in gender-based analysis. Her approach aims to combat ageism, especially concerning urinary incontinence, cognitive impairment, mental health and inappropriate medication use.
