Biography
Dr Sylvie Belleville is a full professor in psychology at Université de Montreal and the research director of the Institut Universitaire de Gériatrie de Montréal (IUGM). Canada Research Chair in Cognitive Neuroscience of Aging and Brain Plasticity holder. Director of the Consortium pour l’identification précoce de la maladie d’Alzheimer (CIMA-Q). Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration in Aging (CCNA) Cognitive Intervention, Reserve and Brain Plasticity team leader. Canadian Academy of Health Sciences fellow.
Research interests
Dr Belleville’s research aims to advance knowledge about how cognitive reserve and brain plasticity prevent or delay neurodegenerative diseases in aging. She also works towards developing training programs to increase resilience. Hence, Dr Belleville’s work contributes to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms which allow some people to better resist the effects of aging, as well as the individual characteristics that make some people more responsive to cognitive training. Moreover, she is developing strategies to make cognitive training programs accessible to most Canadians, using new technologies (such as virtual reality or online platforms). Finally, she has also developed a major research program to better characterize the early stages of this disease.
