Biography
Nathalie Bier is full professor at the School of Rehabilitation, Occupational Therapy Program of the Université de Montréal, and a Junior 2 FRQS researcher. After completing a B.A. in occupational therapy at the Université de Montréal, she completed a master’s degree in biomedical sciences at the Université de Montréal on cognitive rehabilitation for people with severe memory problems. She then obtained a Ph.D. at the Université de Sherbrooke, in co-direction with Belgium, on cognitive rehabilitation with different forms of dementia (typical and atypical). Finally, she completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Centre de recherche de l’Université Laval – Robert Giffard on relearning of activities of daily living in atypical dementia and its cognitive representations.
Research interests
The main objective of her research program is to promote home care for persons with cognitive disorders. Her work aims to better understand the impact of cognitive deficits, particularly those related to aging and neurocognitive disorders, on daily living functioning. Her research program also aims to develop new interventions to promote home care, such as cognitive rehabilitation, the use of new technologies and community mobilization. In the field of technology, she is particularly interested in smart environments and connected objects. Her work is carried out through collaborative research approaches, such as action research, living labs and user-centered design. She is conducting research projects in various living environments of older adults and with numerous partners in the health, charity and industry sectors.
